"Dont be afraid" by ff44
Open your heart, and let loves angels hear your anguished cry.
Please dry your eyes it aint no use in crying
things happen in our lives that are so hard to bare
deep in your heart you must begin to trust in love again..
Lift up your head,no need to feel downhearted
I know when love is lost it makes you feel so small
dont be afraid, afraid to show your feelings..
The world wont end because your lover has said goodby
deep in your heart you must begin to trust in love again
dont be afraid, afraid to show your feelings
I know when love is lost it makes you feel so small.
Dont you give up,you have to keep on trying
better to have loved and lost, than to never know love at all..

I just love that great funky guitar sound and playing style you bring out the great 70s music style, awesome vocals too, and with a good lyrical meaning, great sounding percussion too, very well mixed as always.
Nice one Gene, a great start to 2009, and there will be more to come I hope

Without doubt this the finest song I've heard from you so far. Everything about it is superb. Excellent melody & lyrics which the instrumentation and vocals perfectly convey. Fab guitar over latinesque beats (a slight nod towards early Steely Dan methinks) and nicely balanced production.
I'm on my third listen because there should be an extended 7 minute version - or as long as you like, I could listen to stuff of this quality all day.

"Better to have loved and lost..." sometimes it doesn't seem like it, but it's true, and the lyrics are excellent, a positive message, and one that needs to be repeated often-- what better way than in song? Mellow, Gene, and gently done-- as it should be. And what a way to start the new year!

Way cool late 60s early 70s kind of sound, laid back. expert use of the wah wah pedal. I didn't notice that the lyrics don't have much rhyme but then "Stairway to Heaven" doesn't either. Rhyme only serves to make it easier to memorize. Alfred Lord Tennyson quipped, "it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." Lord only knows where he stole it from. Love and death are the territory of poets.

This is a very groovy track with some pretty deep lyrics. I love what that funky electric guitar does in this song. I wish that the vocals were fronted a little bit more. Without the seeing the lyrics, it's difficult to hear what the song is about. Thanks for sharing, Gene!

Really nice thought out lyrics Gene, but you have the art for this
Your vocal on this is so nice & gentle with a kind of warm expression to explain the ups & downs of love
I love the musical arrangement & the guitar work is outstanding

Love that buttery guitar tone! Is that a VST effect?
The vocal harmonies are...as per usual...damn nigh perfect, but there was a kind of unusual phenomenon in them, for these ears. The lyrics were a lot more immediate for me in the bits where their delivery diverged most. The closer harmonies, both in pitch and in so-tightly-timed-that-they-hardly-chorused timing, had a lovely portamento organish sound to them, but I realized that the words weren’t really registering for me until you’d hit a spot where the two (or more?) voices started doing very different things. I wouldn’t call it a “problem”, not even a small one, but I know how much you enjoy crafting these things, and I figure you’d probably enjoy exploring this on later tracks...not making ALL the harmonies more divergent (your choices in this arena are pretty tasty as they are, I think), but it might be fun to try spreading out the dynamics where the vocals are really close in pitch in timing, and mixing them...well, pretty much as you did here, when they get a little more naturally incidental distance between them. I don’t know; maybe it would flatten things right out and rob a little of the drama. But like I said, it might be a fun thing to try, if you haven’t already.

I think you are kinda underrated as a guitarist, because the whole package is greater than the parts. I like it all but them tones rule.
The songwriting is superb too, deserves to be read separately, so I'm glad you typed it in here - because the music is really enjoyable behind it. Very cool.

Cool segue around the 2:00 mark.
The vocal performance is great.....I really like the melody too.

Superb mix of styles this, kind of breakbeat, downbeat with a mild drum`n`bass hint in there too, once again the vocals and guitaring are mint, the breaks in the beat are really good and the whole mix is spot on. Another cracking track well done
